Rutherford Appleton Laboratory (RAL) is within
half an hours drive of both Oxford and Reading. Both are good shopping
centres with plenty of pubs, clubs, theatres and cinemas. London is only
45 minutes away by train from Didcot Parkway.
The laboratory is in the midst of the beautiful Oxfordshire and
Berkshire countryside, with the Ridgeway passing close to the site -a
historical and popular route for walkers and cyclists. The area is well
served by country pubs serving good quality food.
The RAL site is surrounded by a number of villages, some larger towns,
and the city of Oxford with its wealth of cultural interest is with easy
reach. The larger centres of population provide the greatest range of
accommodation. Typically staff live in either:
- Abingdon - Situated on the river Thames, with plenty of pubs.
- Didcot - Closer to the site, with good rail links.
- Oxford - A Lively city with a broad range of facilities, shops and activities,
as well as a lively night life.
- Wantage - Peaceful market town.
South Oxfordshire is well served by public transport, with regular busses
from Oxford and the local towns to the RAL site.
